Sattyananda - Internal Activities

Largely beatless, the emphasis is on a pensive relaxation of the sounds, then the mind. Organic instruments come into play: flute, sarangi, santoor, sitar and vocals add an extra dimension to the synths and sequencers. But the real draw here is that Sattyananda is someone who genuinely believes in something. He is true to his music and audience. Through the whole album there is a sense of calmness. These are tracks that are perfect for rainy days and lonely evenings. Internal Activities is really a piece of art.

The Theatre of Eternal Music gave performances on the East Coast of the United States as well as in Western Europe that consisted of long periods of sensory inundation with combinations of harmonic relationships, which moved slowly from one to the next by means of "laws" laid out by La Monte Young regarding "allowable" sequences and simultinaeities.

In 1964 the ensemble contained Young and Marian Zazeela, voices; Tony Conrad and John Cale, strings; and sometimes Terry Riley, voice. The Theater of Eternal Music's discordant sustained notes and loud amplification influenced John Cale's subsequent contribution to the Velvet Underground in his use of both discordance and feedback. John Cale and Tony Conrad have released noise Music recordings they made during the mid-sixties, such as Cale's Inside the Dream Syndicate series (The Dream Syndicate being the alternative name given by Cale and Conrad to their collective work with La Monte Young).

Sostrah Tinnitus - Caravanserraglio

Fantastic instrumental ambient with old-world flavor and an organic palette, this lowly cdr release holds material that is worthy of repressing on 180 gram vinyl and calling an essential in any collection. I admire the craftsmanship but am also rendered senseless by the magic spell of this work, being pulled out of reverie into some induced daydream every two minutes or so. So much distinctive character within each piece, and each piece flows into the next, but is not strict drift. There is so much layered construction here but it feels effortless, natural - working in drones, thunderous drift, tabla, flute, distant voices and an almost rhythmic wailing here and there.
